Alleged Arsonist Arrested
A former Front Royal resident has been apprehended on charges of setting fire to multiple homes during the summer. Front Royal Police say one of the fires set by Deborah Engelhardt, 50, of Dale City was her former home on Cherrydale Avenue. Officials say her stepdaughter, 12, was sleeping inside at the time. All three Cherrydale Avenue fires occurred between August 28th and September 1st. Engelhardt is also facing child neglect charges. She is being held without bond and could get life in prison if convicted.
Iraq Study Group Appreciated
Tenth District Republican Congressman Frank Wolf played a big role in setting up the Iraq Study Group. Wolf says he's pleased with how the report turned out. He says the report enables the country to move toward consensus. Wolf says when America is together we are very strong, but when divided we're weak. The report makes 79 recommendations for what the U-S should do next, including shifting U.S. troops from combat to training and engaging in more diplomacy. Wolf says his colleagues on Capitol Hill, the President and even the media have welcomed the report.
Growth Control Has Critics
The counties of Loudoun and Prince William both took steps this week to limit growth, and the effects could be felt beyond their borders. Frederick County Planning Commissioner Roger Thomas says the rest of Virginia's counties will be following any legal challenges to Prince William's one-year moratorium on housing construction. He says he hopes it will be overturned. Loudoun County Supervisors have drastically reduced the number of homes possible in the county's rural west. Thomas says growth control measures only push development elsewhere in lieu of proper planning.
Industry Yes, Retail No
The Frederick County Planning Commission has okayed the rezoning of 75 acres near the intersection of Fort Collier and Brooke Roads for industrial uses. The proffer originally included a one million square-foot development cap, but the Commission lifted it as part of its favorable recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. The panel rejected the rezoning of Rutherford Crossing near the intersection of Interstate 81 and Martinsburg Pike on a 7-3 vote. The proposal calls for a retail center to be built on 31 rezoned acres. Traffic congestion was among the concerns of Commissioners.
Justice Served 15 Years Later
A Charles Town, West Virginia man was convicted in Fairfax County Court Tuesday of a crime occurring 15 years ago. A jury found Troy Holland, 38, guilty of abducting, raping and robbing a 19-year-old woman in November of 1991. Holland was linked to the crime by D.N.A. found on the victim's blouse. Donald Roper, 40, of Fredericksburg, was arrested last year for his role in the crime. He was sentenced last week to 115 years behind bars.
